The Tacoma Vet Center has
targeted the following special interest groups for concentrated
outreach efforts to address their specific needs:
• HOMELESS VETERANS: All Vet Centers
have homeless coordinators on staff. In Tacoma, the homeless
coordinator performs outreach in a variety of settings
including direct service at local shelters and missions.
We participate in community meetings, including the Tacoma
Mayor’s Veteran’s Task Force and the Tacoma
Pierce County Coalition for the Homeless. The Vet Center
also participates in Stand Down, a national effort to
provide extended services to homeless veterans.
• WOMEN VETERANS: Women veterans
and their specific needs are a priority for the Vet Center.
Special counseling is available for any veteran who experienced
sexual abuse, sexual harassment, or sexual trauma while
in the military.
• MINORITY VETERANS: The Vet Center
places special emphasis upon conducting outreach activities
for ethnic and cultural minority veterans and their families.
• GEOGRAPHICALLY SEPARATED VETERANS: The
Tacoma Vet Center manages a program extending counseling
services to veterans in outlying areas. This program provides
funding to local community mental health professionals
for readjustment counseling. Veterans are able to receive
services in their own communities.
